The draft in America ending was viewed as a good thing but now we have since the Bush era Americans on the left questioning if it was such a good thing after all because military service has fallen on the American poor.

Well, gosh, what does the author of this piece thinks should be done with the Haredi population?

National Service options.

In the USA we have the left calling for a draft to be looked at after the Iraq war showed so few Americans serving. As an alternative to being drafted a national non military service was proposed. I do find that attractive. I m only bringing this up in the American context and I like using situations in other democracies to illuminate America's issues. For example, I would ponder Canada's health care system to see how we can improve the American situation where applicable.

I've always thought it was nonsense that the Haredi could opt out of service.

It is perhaps worth noting I am neither Israeli, Jewish, nor religious when I make such a statement.

It bothers me that the Rabbinate in the IDF is becoming more strident on the same level that find it extremely distasteful of the evangelicals who have wormed their way into the U.S. military.

National Service is good, but I think they should serve in the IDF.

National Service is good, but I think they should serve in the IDF.

And if they do, they don't get religious exceptions when it comes to following commands from female officers either. They need to buck up and deal with their religious biases, IMO.
